![]() “Typography must be as beautiful as a forest, not like the concrete jungle of the tenements It gives distance between the trees, the room to breathe and allow for life.” So I wanted to search for more inspiration on what to base my poster on.Īs I was doing more research on Adrian, I found this quote he made: Unfortunately, I found it quite boring and lackluster when I translated it onto Adobe inDesign. At first, I thought of a standard poster with “Avenir” and “Adrian Frutiger” at the top, followed by the paragraphs and typeset. I began by sketching out potential layouts for my poster. Many of them used darker and “cooler” colors, giving more of an impression that Avenir was more calculated and perfectionist -and so I wanted to do something different. ![]() My decision to portray Avenir in this light was also partially due to the examples I saw online. This picture probably sums up the warm natural image I was thinking of: In the beginning, he had also worked a lot with wood and so an image stuck in my head of a young Adrian Frutiger working in a cabin surrounded by trees in the mid-1940s. ![]() I was especially moved about Adrian Frutiger’s decision to take an apprenticeship in printing instead of going into a traditional art college. At first, I wasn’t sure how I wanted to portray Avenir, but after reading more about Adrian Frutiger’s humble beginnings, I decided that I wanted to convey Avenir in that light- emphasizing on its warm, humanist touches as compared to other similar typefaces like Futura. I began by understanding Avenir’s roots and the life of its creator, Adrian Frutiger. The typeface I was given was “Avenir” by Adrian Frutiger Using that typeface, we had to create a poster that established the qualities of the typeface, as well as include a short paragraph of its history, the name of the typeface, its full character typeset and an optional quote. ![]() For our third assignment, we were randomly given a typeface. ![]()
